Powerchip open new China LED plant by 2011

Powerchip Technology Corporation announced on Fridady(Aug. 13th) that they are constructing new LED materials plants in Xuzhou, China, which was part of the plan to diversify their business. And the plant will be put in use by 2011.

Frank Huang, Chairman of Powerchip, said on the sideline of a technology forum in Shanghai that the new plant will take full use of the geographic advantage and powerful transportation links after its operation.

Several months ago, Powerchip announced that it will invest US$15 million through a third location in the Xuzhou facility, will will manufacture LED EPI wafers and chips, core LED materials.

In addition, the company plans to invest US$300 million in China for ELD production facilities in China, which will greatly help to cushion the impact from its core business--DRAM manufacturing.

Nowadays, many Taiwanese high-tech firms, such as Powerchip, TSMC, UMC are investing in the production of LEDs and solar cells, and are targeting China's market.

Nearly 1 million LED TVs were sold in China in the first half of 2010, which shares 10.6% of all flat panel TVs sold during the period. The rate are expected to ramp up to 25% in the second half of 2010, which shows that LED sector will grow accordingly.

TSMC annonced last month that it will raise its 2010 capital expenditure to US$5.9 billion which is US$1.1 billion higher than the original plan, US$100 million will be used to explore new business for diversification, which the market believe will be directed at the LED and solar power sectors.
